Keep It Wild, BC

Sponsored Article: A Q&A with Bruce the Lynx

1.    You’ve been spotted all over BC lately. What’s the story behind this road trip?

Well, I was digging around in my basement looking for my bowling ball (don’t ask) when I found my old scrapbook. Back in the day, I was outside all the time, fishing, camping, hiking, the whole nine yards. I had all these great old photos of me running wild across BC.

So I brought it over to show my niece and nephew (I call ‘em my kits — you know, like baby lynx) thinking they’d get a kick out of it. They… didn’t. Said those places are all just strip malls and selfie spots now. That really ruffled my tufts.

I figured, alright, I’ll hit the road to see for myself. And you know what’s awesome? I’ve been meeting some incredible folks out here, families, hikers, hunters, anglers, guides, and others who care about wild places as much as I do… maybe more (which is really saying something). It’s got me thinking, if our wild places are changing or disappearing, what would BC be without its wild?

2.    Why ask that question now?

Everyone’s got a story about the outdoors around here. Really — EVERYONE. It means a lot to everyone around here. It’s practically in our DNA.

I see folks who are working, wandering or exploring the land. They may be doing different things but one thing’s for sure, we are connected by the land. The wild is something we all share.

When I was young the outdoors was where life happened. Being out on the open road with my tunes and snacks has me thinking about my niece and nephew. Will they get to enjoy these wild spaces like me? Are we taking it all for granted?

3.    Who have you been meeting on your travels?

All kinds! I met a guy who spent his whole weekend finding the best fishing spot. Another lady, she knew the mountains like the back of her hand! I love hearing their stories. Some of the folks I met could probably navigate the backcountry with a blindfold on. (I have been known to lose my pickup in parking lots, so I’m definitely impressed.)

What really gets me is how much pride folks have about this land. Like, real RESPECT. Not just “post a selfie and don’t forget your garbage” level of appreciation. The real deal.

4.    What kinds of questions are you asking people?

I wanna know their favourite outdoor spot, and what keeps them coming back to it. Are they thinking about the future like I am? What do they hope the wild looks like years from now for their kits or grandkits? I’ve been asking them about protecting the outdoors, but what does that really mean?

I don’t have all the answers. Honestly, I’m just trying to listen and learn at this point. (And avoid running into a moose on those backroads. Priorities.)

5.    What have you learned so far?

Here’s the thing. You might be surprised to know that folks from all walks of life all say pretty much the same stuff about the outdoors and how it’s a part of who we are. Here in BC, we’re crazy proud of our wild spaces.

You know that awesome feeling when you hit the top of the mountain or take in a stellar view? Or look up into the trees that are towering overhead? Or catch a whiff of pine tar? These are the best feelings, right? These things make you feel ALIVE, like you’re part of something bigger than yourself. You don’t get that from sitting on the sofa. (Trust me, I’ve tested this extensively.)

The people I’ve met want the amazing feeling of BC’s wild places to stick around, and not disappear forever. And they don’t just want this for themselves, but for others in the future.

6.    What do you hope comes out of this journey?

I’m hoping we can start more conversations to keep BC wild.

The outdoors has this way of bringing people together. I’d love if this road trip gets folks talking about the wild places they love and how we can all help keep BC wild for the long haul. And hey, if I run into some of your readers out there? I hope they say hi or better yet, bring snacks! I’m partial to Ptarmigan Puffs.

7.    Where is the road taking you next?

Honestly, I’m letting the road decide! Mama Nature, take the wheel! There are lots of amazing places in BC to explore and even more people to meet along the way.

I’ve got some friends in Northern BC I want to catch up with, so I’m gonna head there next.

My niece and nephew got me on “the socials” (their word, not mine) and set up a website at keepitwildbca.ca so family and friends can follow along. Wild times, eh? I have my own tech support! I hope you drop me a line. And you happen to see a lynx driving a pickup truck, give me a wave, would ya? And if you’d like to share your story of BC’s wild with me, I’m all ears.
