Fishing Memories

By Raeanne O’Meara

After a lengthy winter of sitting on the ice and jigging in the cold for fish, the warmth and longer days of spring are a welcome respite. Jumping at just about any and all opportunities to spend some time near or on the water, it comes down to being a good excuse to be outdoors and take in the fresh air.

Fishing is accessible to people for a multitude of reasons, the most obvious being how simple it is to get set up. For under $50, you can get yourself a rod and reel combo with a bobber, dig up a few worms and cast for fish from shore. In a world where outdoor recreation can seem extravagant and flashy, sometimes all you need is the simple things.

With the weather being too nice to be stuck inside, my partner and I decided to grab a couple of casting rods and have a little impromptu shore dinner. We hopped in the truck and swung by the local grocery store to grab a few things – some crackers, cheese and a coil of garlic sausage later, we left with a wallet that was roughly $47 lighter than it was when we walked into the store (you’ve got to love small town prices.)

A short drive later and we were casting the bobbers out into the water, rods leaned against the rocks as we watched for any signs of action and cracked into our very expensive dinner. The wind had picked up, as it almost always does when I so much as think of fishing, so it was a balance of snacking on a couple cheese and meat crackers in between casts. A person couldn’t complain too much I suppose, as the wind kept the mosquitoes at bay. Eventually, we had to pack up and head home, but it was a fun way to spend the evening.

Whether out in our boat fishing for salmon at the ocean, or simply casting from shore for rainbow trout, the little memories that are made and recollected while out fishing makes for an always enjoyable pastime.
