Poachers Caught Fishing the Fraser River

During the 10 days precceeding August 25, nine boats and 60 nets have been seized from alleged poachers on the Fraser River by fisheries officials. Through that same time period, 30 investigations into these and other poaching activities have begun.

The area of the the Fraser between the mouth at the Lower Mainland to just north of Yale has been closed to all salmon fishing and has applied to all sectors of fishing. The closure has been enacted due to low sockeye returns and higher-than-normal water temperatures. Closures like this have occurred in the past but the combination of both the low numbers and the high water temperatures make this particular closure extraordinary.
