Some areas of British Columbia have seen a decline in moose numbers by up to 70% .

With 230 resident moose to be included in this 2013 study, GPS will be used to track the ungulates. The collars are equipped with what is called a “mortality sensor” which will send a notification once one of the collared moose is down noting “I am dead.”

Ideally, the downed moose can now be located for necropsy within 48 hours of the death notification. Previously, other wildlife would devour the body or environmental conditions would cause significant decay prior to biologists accessing the body. With this new system, hopefully researchers will be more able to accurately pinpoint the cause of death, helping to provide information as to the decline.
