This year’s Learning with the Pros spring event at Onion Lake / Ruddocks Dam didn’t disappoint! The spectacular setting was the perfect backdrop for a fantastic few days of fishing, coupled with a collection of informative seminars from Brian Chan and Phil Rowley. Topics in our outdoor classroom included entomology lessons –– from chironomids and leeches to may and damselflies – and tutorials on fishing with indicators, line selection and fighting big fish.
Our guests came from all over western Canada to participate, and to take advantage of the athletic trout at this outstanding fishery. Our editor Mike Mitchell and Riverside Fly and Tackle’s Garry Elgear were on hand to provide expert advice, with Garry landing the fish of the weekend – a feisty 10-pounder. Our attendees were in good form as well, with Mark Miller in particular bringing trout after trout to the boat on Saturday. Everyone got a chance to fish one on one with our pros.
The weather was pristine, and really showed off this idyllic spot in the Fraser Canyon. Our hosts from Ruddocks Ranch set up the perfect campsite right on the lakeshore, and we were treated to stunning displays from local wildlife, including a troupe of black and cinnamon bears who trundled down through a meadow across the lake to check out the rainbows spawning in the creek there. It couldn’t have been much better.
Thank you to everyone who joined us this year, and to our hosts from Ruddocks. We look forward to seeing you all again soon!
