In younger years I would carry a lot of products and gadgets with me on any given hunt. Most of it I never needed but I had to have it with me "just in case." As I got older I cut drastically down on what I carry with me. Now my philosophy is, "If I can't fit it into a waist pouch and into the cargo pockets of my pants and jacket I don't need it."

What do you carry with you on a one day hunting trip?

Here is my short list of basic items that I carry with me on an average day hunt.

A small basic first aid kit is at the top of my list.

I also carry a Swiss Army Knife that serves to cut food and field dress game.

Small bottle of water (I store a ten gallon canister in the truck.)

GPS unit and compass

Flashlight

Matches and fire starter

Binoculars

Three spare cartridges besides the four I carry in the rifle magazine.

Space blanket(they fold very small and fit into a shirt pocket)

One 3ft.long nylon rope to drag the deer out.

A small nasal spray bottle filled with unscented talcum powder to check the wind direction and air currents.

Depending on the time of the season I may also carry a deer call, rattling antlers and deer attractant scent.

Since I hunt all day from dawn to dusk without returning to camp I carry a small lunch with me, consisting of a few chocolate bars, a small bag of assorted nuts and dried fruit and maybe some beef or deer jerky.

That is about all I take with me and I never felt that I need more on one day deer hunt.
